Pee Gee Hydrangea

The Pee Gee Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata) is a beautiful hydrangea with cone shaped flowers—the flowers start out white, and as they age turn pink. The Pee Gee blooms from mid to late summer, through the fall. This shrub can grow six to eight feet tall, but can be pruned to keep the growth in check. This can also be trained to grow as a small tree. They prefer full sun to partial shade and acidic soil. There is also a Compact variety that is better for smaller areas which grows 4-6 feet tall.

Hydrangea Pink Diamond

Pink Diamond Hydrangea have large creamy-white blooms turning to pink. Blooms are very long lasting, usually well into late fall. Likes lots of sun. Growth is typically 6-8 feet tall, but can be pruned back to desired.

Heather

Heathers (Erica and Calluna) are evergreen, branching low growing shrubs which are very well suited to the Pacific Northwest. They do well in our mari-time climate. Different varieties offer different bloom times anywhere from winter to summer. They grow in lower mounds, with multiple spikes of colored flowers—flowers can be white, purple, pink or mauve. They make great groundcovers in bedding areas as they will spread and fill out spaces. Heather prefers sun and well-drained, acidic soil. There are many different varieties available, and by planting several different types, you can achieve year-round flowering to provide spots of color even in our grey winters.

Russian Sage

Russian Sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia) is a perennial which has tall wispy wands of lavender blue flowers and silvery green foliage. Russian Sage blooms midsummer into the fall and makes a nice tall flower border. This plant can reach 3-5 feet high and approximately 2 feet wide. This plant likes well drained soil and prefers sun though it will do OK in partial shade. The flowers are fragrant and attract butterflies.

Azalea

This azalea is a small to medium sized shrub with many varieties which can bloom in white, pink, red or purple flowers. These can grow 3-4 feet tall and can spread 7-8 feet, and can be pruned back as desired. They like well-drained soil, more acidic soil. These typically flower in April and May. They can be used as landscape specimens—also look nice as a small informal border.

Sarcococca

Sarcococca, or sweetbox, is an evergreen shrub with white flowers in the winter. The leaves are oval in shape and the flowers have a strong pleasant smell. After it is done flowering, it will often have berries turning from red to black. It is a great choice for shady areas, as it thrives in shade. It is relatively slow growing, and can grow up to 4 feet high by 4 feet wide. There is also a second variety that grows much smaller—to 12 inches high. This plant likes well-drained soil, and is resistant to most pests.
